Same Names, Different Years, Different Time Controls |
When chess enthusiasts hear the name “Kasparov,” they think not only of one of the greatest chess players in history, but also of the final era of chess before the advent of technology. Following his legendary battles with Karpov, there were the title matches against Short and Anand, then the Deep Blue competitions, and finally his loss to Kramnik. In this article, we will analyze two games he played against English Grandmaster Nigel Short in different years and at different time controls. Now let's go back to London in 1993:

The Most ‘Memorable’ Game in Blitz |
#chess In our last post, we shared with you a relatively recent, impressive game played under rapid time-control. In this article, we will try to show you that there are also some games that leave their mark not only in rapid chess but also in blitz, one with a specific story.
One of the ways Robert James Fischer sought to further his development following his rapid rise in chess was his visit to the Soviet Union in 1958. A year earlier, his mother Regina Fischer had sent a letter to Nikita Khrushchev, asking for her son to participate in the World Youth and Student Festival held in Moscow. Yuri Averbakh, who would later become a leading figure in Soviet chess, described the request and the visit’s failure to materialize as follows: “...The wheels of our bureaucracy turned slowly, and while the matter was being discussed, the Festival had already ended. However, an invitation was sent to the American to visit the Soviet Union the following year...”

The Beauty of Speed Chess |
#chess After all the exciting clashes in FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, it is truly heartening to see the sympathy shown for classical chess, whose future has been questioned for some time and even compared to the ‘Freestyle’ variant. In this important tournament, held under the Swiss System where every single point is highly valuable, the players proved to the chess world how competitive they can be when focused on a specific goal rather than just protecting their ratings.
The other side of the coin is why chess enthusiasts are drawn to rapid and blitz time formats. While players aim to avoid the difficult and exhausting opening preparation phase, for amateurs or club players, following speed games is often more enjoyable because critical moments are reached much more quickly.
